Humalog® KwikPen® and other delivery options

What to expect when starting Humalog

Everyone’s experience with mealtime insulin is different, but there are some things you can look out for when following these steps.

  • dose changes
  • Dose changes Your Humalog dose will probably change over time. Your healthcare provider gave you a starting dose, but most people need to increase their Humalog dose after the first day.
  • blood sugar variations
  • Blood sugar variations When you track your blood sugar every day, you will probably see different numbers all the time. These variations in your blood sugar from day to day are normal.
  • changes are normal
  • Changes are normal Your blood sugar varies based on stress, what you eat, other medications, exercise, and other factors. Don’t beat yourself up when you see changes in your blood sugar. With your healthcare provider’s input, these variations may provide learning opportunities.

Select Safety Information

Do not take Humalog, Humalog Mix75/25, or Humalog Mix50/50 if your blood sugar is too low (hypoglycemia) or if you are allergic to insulin lispro or any of the ingredients in these insulins.

Preparing

Step 1

Pull the Pen Cap straight off.

Wipe the Rubber Seal with an alcohol swab.

  • Do not twist the cap
  • Do not remove the KwikPen Label

Humalog should look clear and colorless. Do not use Humalog if it is thick, cloudy, colored, has solid particles or clumps in it.

Step 2

Pull the Paper Tab from the Outer Needle Shield.

Step 3

Push the capped Needle straight onto the Pen and turn the Needle forward until it is tight.

Step 4

Pull off the Outer Needle Shield. Do not throw it away.

Pull off the Inner Needle Shield and throw it away.

Priming

Prime before each injection. Priming ensures KwikPen is ready to dose and removes air that may collect in the cartridge during normal use.

If you do not prime KwikPen before each injection, you may get too much or too little insulin.

Step 5

Turn the Dose Knob to select 2 units.

Step 6

Hold the Pen with the Needle pointing up.

Tap the Cartridge Holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top.

Step 7

Hold the Pen with the Needle pointing up. Push the Dose Knob in until it stops and “0” is seen in the Dose Window. Hold the Dose Knob in and count to 5 slowly.

  • You should see a stream of insulin from the Needle
    • If you do not see a stream of insulin, repeat steps 5 to 7, no more than 4 times
    • If you still do not see a stream of insulin, change the Needle and repeat steps 5 to 7

Selecting the Dose

Step 8

Turn the Dose Knob to select the number of units to inject. The Dose Indicator should line up with the needed dose.

  • The dose can be corrected by turning the Dose Knob in either direction until the correct dose lines up with the Dose Indicator
  • The even numbers are printed on the dial. The odd numbers, after the number 1, are shown as full lines

KwikPen will not let you dial more than the number of units left in the Pen. If the needed dose is more than the number of units left in the Pen, you may either:

  • Inject the amount left in the Pen and then use a new KwikPen to deliver the rest of the dose

OR

  • Get a new KwikPen and inject the full dose

KwikPen is designed to deliver a total of 300 units of insulin. The cartridge contains an additional small amount of insulin that cannot be delivered.

Injecting

  • Inject insulin as instructed here or by your healthcare provider
  • Change (rotate) the injection site for each injection
  • Do not try to change your dose while injecting insulin

Step 9

Choose your injection site.

Humalog is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach area, buttocks, upper legs or upper arms.

Wipe the skin with an alcohol swab, and let the injection site dry before you inject your dose.

Step 10

Insert the Needle into the skin.

Step 11

Put your thumb on the Dose Knob and push the Dose Knob in until it stops. Hold the Dose Knob in and slowly count to 5.

Step 12

Pull the Needle out of the skin.

  • You should see "0" in the Dose Window
    • If you do not see "0" in the Dose Window, you did not inject the full dose
    • If you see blood after you take the Needle out of the skin, press the injection site lightly with a piece of gauze or an alcohol swab. Do not rub the area

A drop of insulin at the Needle tip is normal. It will not affect the dose.

If you do not think you received your full dose, do not take another dose. Call Lilly or your healthcare provider for assistance.

Step 13

Carefully replace the Outer Needle Shield.

Step 14

Unscrew the capped Needle and throw it away.

Do not store KwikPen with the Needle attached, to prevent leaking, blocking of the Needle, and/or air from entering the pen.

Step 15

Replace the Pen Cap by lining up the Cap Clip with the Dose Indicator and pushing straight on.

After injecting

Put used Needles in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away after use. Do not throw away (dispose of) loose Needles in your household trash.

Select Safety Information

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is a possible side effect of insulin that may be severe and cause unconsciousness (passing out), seizures, and death. Test your blood sugar levels as your healthcare provider instructs. Talk to your doctor about low blood sugar symptoms and treatment.

To decide which delivery method is right for you, ask your healthcare team about these options and to discuss the pros and cons with you.

If you go through more than 3 mealtime insulin pens each month, Humalog U-200 KwikPen might be right for you

HumaPen LUXURA HD

Primarily for people with type 1 diabetes who need small, precise doses, HumaPen LUXURA HD is a reusable insulin pen that allows dosing starting at 0.5 units. The design and features of HumaPen LUXURA HD allow it to deliver accurate doses of Humalog in 0.5-unit increments.

You simply "dial" the dose by turning the dose knob in 0.5-unit increments (from 0.5 to 30 units) after initial setup. If you dial too many units, you can correct the dose without wasting any insulin by dialing backwards.

HumaPen LUXURA HD is for use only with Humalog 3 mL insulin cartridges. HumaPen LUXURA HD and Humalog insulin cartridges are available by prescription only. Needles should be purchased separately and may require a prescription.

Using HumaPen LUXURA HD

Carefully read all of the instructions in the Instructions for Use before using the pen. If you do not follow these instructions completely, you may get too much or too little insulin. Also, read the Patient Information for Humalog for full insulin storage and disposal information. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about important safety considerations and the proper injection technique. Your healthcare provider should show you how to inject Humalog before you start taking it.

Pens and needles are for single-patient use only and should not be shared, even in healthcare facilities, as infection or disease can be spread from one person to another.

Do not withdraw insulin from the pen cartridge.

Insulin pump

An insulin pump is another way to deliver Humalog U-100 to your body. The insulin pump stores Humalog inside it and has a small, bendable, plastic tube attached at one end. This tube goes into the skin through a small needle. Once the tube is set in place, the needle is removed. To deliver the amount of insulin needed, a button on the pump is pushed. The pump is small enough to be worn on a belt or kept in a pocket.

Why use a pump?

For some people, an insulin pump can help improve diabetes management and make it more flexible. A pump may be a good option if any of these apply:

  • You regularly test your blood sugar
  • You are active and have an inconsistent meal and physical activity schedule
  • You have demonstrated the ability to manage your diabetes but don't want to draw attention to it

Have your healthcare team discuss the pros and cons of external insulin pumps with you. They can help you decide whether taking Humalog with an external insulin pump is right for you.

Insulin pump stores Humalog inside it

Select Safety Information

Failure of your insulin pump or infusion set or degradation of the insulin in the pump can cause hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis. Always carry an alternate form of insulin administration in case of pump failure.

When used in a pump, do not mix Humalog U-100 with any other insulin or liquid. Do not use Humalog Mix75/25, Humalog Mix50/50, or Humalog U-200 in a pump.
