If you used to take mealtime insulin 3 times a day, you’ll still take it 3 times a day with Humalog U-200 KwikPen.

How should I use Humalog U-200 KwikPen?

These are not the full instructions. Please click here to view the complete Instructions for Use.

Injection Instructions for Humalog U-200 KwikPen

These are not the full instructions. Please see the Instructions for Use that comes with your pen for full instructions.

Preparing

Step 1

Pull the Pen Cap straight off.

  • Do not twist the cap
  • Do not remove the KwikPen Label

Wipe the Rubber Seal with an alcohol swab.

Humalog should look clear and colorless. Do not use Humalog if it is thick, cloudy, colored, has solid particles or clumps in it.

Step 2

Select a new Needle.

Pull the Paper Tab from the Outer Needle Shield.

Step 3

Push the capped Needle straight onto the Pen and twist the Needle on until it is tight.

Step 4

Pull off the Outer Needle Shield. Do not throw it away.

Pull off the Inner Needle Shield and throw it away.

Priming

Prime before each injection. Priming ensures the Pen is ready to use and removes air that may collect in the cartridge during normal use.

If you do not prime before each injection, you may get too much or too little insulin.

Step 5

Turn the Dose Knob to select 2 units.

Step 6

Hold your Pen with the Needle pointing up. Tap the Cartridge Holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top.

Step 7

Continue holding your Pen with Needle pointing up. Push the Dose Knob in until it stops, and “0” is seen in the Dose Window. Hold the Dose Knob in and count to 5 slowly.

  • You should see insulin at the tip of the needle.
    • If you do not see insulin, repeat the priming (steps 5 to 7), up to but not more than 8 times.
    • If you still do not see insulin, change the Needle and repeat the priming steps.

Small air bubbles are normal and will not affect your dose.

Selecting the Dose

This Pen has been designed to deliver the dose that is shown in the window. Dial your usual dose as instructed by your healthcare provider.

Step 8

Turn the Dose Knob to select the number of units you need to inject. The Dose Indicator should line up with your dose.

  • The Dose Knob clicks as you turn it. Each click of the Dose Knob dials 1 unit at a time.
  • Do not dial your dose by counting the clicks because you may dial the wrong dose.
  • The dose can be corrected by turning the Dose Knob in either direction until the correct dose lines up with the Dose Indicator.
  • The even numbers are printed on the dial.
  • The odd numbers, after the number 1, are shown as full lines.

Always check the number in the Dose Window to make sure you have dialed the correct dose.

  • The Pen will not let you dial more than the number of units left in the Pen.
  • If your dose is more than the number of units left in the Pen, you may either:
    • Inject the amount left in your Pen and then use a new Pen to give the rest of your dose, or
    • Get a new Pen and inject the full dose.
  • The Pen is designed to deliver a total of 600 units of insulin. The cartridge contains an additional small amount of insulin that cannot be delivered. Do not transfer this to a syringe. Severe overdose can result.

Injecting

  • Inject your insulin as your healthcare provider has shown you.
  • Change (rotate) your injection site for each injection.
  • Do not try to change your dose while injecting.

Step 9

Choose your injection site.

Humalog is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach area, buttocks, upper legs, or upper arms.

Wipe the skin with an alcohol swab, and let the injection site dry before you inject your dose.

Step 10

Insert the Needle into your skin.

Step 11

Put your thumb on the Dose Knob and push the Dose Knob in until it stops.

Hold the Dose Knob in and slowly count to 5.

Step 12

Pull the Needle out of your skin.

You should see “0” in the Dose Window. If you do not see “0” in the Dose Window, you did not receive your full dose.

If you see blood after you take the Needle out of your skin, press the injection site lightly with a piece of gauze or an alcohol swab. Do not rub the area.

A drop of insulin at the needle tip is normal. It will not affect your dose.

If you do not think you received your full dose, do not take another dose. If you have questions, call your healthcare provider.

Step 13

Carefully replace the Outer Needle Shield.

Step 14

Unscrew the capped Needle and throw it away.

Do not store the Pen with the Needle attached to prevent leaking, blocking of the Needle, and air from entering the Pen.

Step 15

Replace the Pen Cap by lining up the Cap Clip with the Dose Indicator and pushing straight on.

After injecting

Put used Needles in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away after use. Do not throw away (dispose of) loose Needles in your household trash.

Select Safety Information

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is a possible side effect of insulin that may be severe and cause unconsciousness (passing out), seizures, and death. Test your blood sugar levels as your healthcare provider instructs. Talk to your doctor about low blood sugar symptoms and treatment.

Select Safety Information

The Humalog in the Humalog 200 units/mL KwikPen should only be injected with the Humalog 200 units/mL KwikPen. Do NOT withdraw Humalog U-200 from the pen using a syringe. It could result in an overdose causing severe low blood sugar which may put your life in danger.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Humalog U-200 KwikPen different from my current U-100 pen?

The difference is that Humalog U-200 KwikPen holds double the mealtime insulin. You will still dial and dose* in the same single-unit increments as Humalog U-100 KwikPen.

*Please see Instructions for Use.

Is the U-200 pen larger than other U-100 mealtime insulin pens because it holds twice the insulin?

No, it is similar in size to other U-100 pens and the same size as the Humalog U-100 KwikPen.

How were you able to fit double the insulin in one pen?

Humalog U-200 KwikPen contains U-200 mealtime insulin, an insulin that’s twice the concentration of Humalog U-100. It allows us to put twice as many units of insulin in the same liquid volume. But don’t worry, we’ve designed the new Humalog U-200 KwikPen so that you don’t have to do any math or calculations to get the correct amount of insulin. You will dial and dose* with the same single-unit measurements as other disposable U-100 mealtime insulin pens.

*Please see Instructions for Use.

Does the insulin in the Humalog U-200 KwikPen work the same as the insulin in Humalog U-100 KwikPen?

The insulin in your Humalog U-200 KwikPen works just like Humalog U-100 insulin to lower your blood sugar. Humalog U-200 insulin is a rapid-acting human insulin analog indicated to improve glycemic control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus.

Does this mean I will have fewer injections?

No, you will still follow the mealtime insulin therapy schedule prescribed by your doctor.

What do I do with my remaining U-100 mealtime insulin pens?

You may use your remaining U-100 mealtime insulin pens as long as they have not expired, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

How long does U-200 KwikPen last once I’ve begun using it?

You will need to discard your Humalog U-200 KwikPen after 28 days in use, even if insulin remains.

Will there be insulin left in my pen when it’s time to discard it?

Each Humalog U-200 KwikPen contains 600 units of mealtime insulin instead of the 300 units of mealtime insulin found in U-100 pens. If you go through 3 or more U-100 pens a month, you should be able to use an entire Humalog U-200 KwikPen within 28 days. Remember: Never withdraw Humalog U-200 from the pen using a syringe. It could result in a severe overdose.

Where can I get a Humalog U-200 KwikPen savings card?

If you have insurance through your employer or independent insurance that is not a government-sponsored plan (for example, Medicaid or Medicare), ask your doctor for a Humalog U-200 KwikPen savings card.

Why do I have to activate my Humalog U-200 KwikPen savings card?

Activating your Humalog U-200 KwikPen savings card ensures that your card is ready for use and that you meet the eligibility requirements. It also offers the opportunity for you to sign up to receive continued information about this and other products.

Why am I only getting two pens per box?

Humalog U-200 KwikPen has double the mealtime insulin, so you do not need as many pens per month.

What if I feel like I am not getting enough pens at the pharmacy?

Because Humalog U-200 KwikPen holds twice as many units of insulin as the U-100 pen, you will receive fewer pens from the pharmacy each month. Pens are packaged 2 per box. If you feel you are not getting enough insulin to meet your dosing needs, talk to your doctor.

Is Humalog U-200 mealtime insulin available in a vial?

No, it is currently only available in a KwikPen. Remember: Never withdraw Humalog U-200 from the pen using a syringe. It could result in a severe overdose. You should always carry a backup pen.

Are you going to discontinue selling Humalog U-100 and Humalog U-100 KwikPen?

No. These products are still available by prescription.

Do I still prime my pen before using?

Yes, you still need to prime it. You will turn the dose knob to 2 units. Hold your pen with the needle pointing up. Tap the cartridge holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top. Continue holding your pen with the needle pointing up. Push the dose knob in until it stops and zero is seen in the dose window. Hold the dose knob in and count to 5 slowly. You may see more of a droplet of insulin on the needle than a stream.

Where do I inject U-200 insulin?

Rotate between typical injection sites, such as the abdomen, buttocks, upper legs, or upper arms. View the demonstration video for more information.

What should I do if my KwikPen is jammed?

Your pen may be jammed if it is difficult to inject a dose or dial a dose. To clear the jam:

  • Attach a new needle. When you do this you may see insulin come out of the needle
  • Prime the pen
  • Dial your dose and inject
Do not withdraw insulin from the pen with a syringe. If the dose knob is still difficult to push, contact your pharmacy or The Lilly Answers Center at 1-800-LillyRx (1-800-545-5979). View the demonstration video for more information.

Are the potential side effects of U-200 similar to those of U-100?

Yes, low blood sugar is the most common side effect. Other possible side effects include severe life-threatening allergic reactions and reactions at the injection site. Please see Important Safety Information below for additional side effects. Ask your healthcare provider for more information or for medical advice.

What should I do if I am experiencing any side effects?

If you are experiencing any side effects, please contact your healthcare providers. You may also report side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088 or contact The Lilly Answers Center at 1-800-LillyRx (1-800-545-5979).
