Glucagon Tutorial

Glucagon is a potentially lifesaving treatment for episodes of severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which could otherwise result in insulin coma or insulin reaction. If you or your child takes insulin, many doctors recommend keeping at least one source of glucagon on hand. Glucagon is given by injection and usually stops the symptoms of severe low blood sugar quickly by releasing a burst of glucose into the blood. The Lilly Glucagon Emergency Kit is small and portable, keeps all the items needed to administer glucagon, and comes in a bright red case which is easy to recognize.

If you do not already have a Lilly Glucagon Emergency Kit, ask your doctor if you or your child needs kits for home or wherever you or your child spends time. The glucagon kit is easy for family, friends, other parents, school nurses, and child care providers to use in case of an emergency. Indication
Glucagon (Glucagon for Injection [rDNA origin]) is used to treat insulin coma or insulin reaction resulting from severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Important Safety Information for Glucagon
You should not use glucagon if you have pheochromocytoma.

  • Severe side effects are very rare, although nausea and vomiting may occur occasionally.
  • A few people may be allergic to glucagon or one of the inactive ingredients in glucagon or may experience rapid heartbeat for a short while.
  • Make sure that your relatives and close friends know that if you become unconscious, medical assistance must always be sought.
  • Do not use glucagon after the date stamped on the bottle label and do not prepare glucagon until you are ready to use it.
  • If you have questions concerning the use of glucagon, consult a healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.

Humalog is for use in patients with diabetes to control high blood sugar and should be used with longer-acting insulin, except when used in combination with sulfonylureas in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Humalog, Humalog Mix75/25, and Humalog Mix50/50 are for use in patients with diabetes to control high blood sugar. Humalog should be used with longer-acting insulin, except when used in combination with sulfonylureas in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Humalog (insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]) is for use in patients with diabetes to control high blood sugar and should be used with longer-acting insulin, except when used in combination with sulfonylureas in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Important Safety Information
Starting or changing insulin therapy should be done cautiously and only under medical supervision.

Humalog should not be used during episodes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or if you are allergic to anything in Humalog.

Humalog is an injectable, fast-acting insulin. Humalog starts working faster than other insulins that contain regular human insulin. Take Humalog within 15 minutes before eating or right after eating a meal. Check your blood sugar levels as told by your healthcare professional.

If you have type 1 diabetes, you need to take a longer-acting insulin in addition to Humalog (except when using an external insulin pump). If you have type 2 diabetes, you may be taking diabetes pills and/or a longer-acting insulin in addition to Humalog.

The safety and effectiveness of Humalog in patients less than 3 years of age have not been established. There are no adequate and well-controlled clinical studies of the use of Humalog in pregnant or nursing women.

Low Blood Sugar
Low blood sugar is the most common adverse effect associated with insulins, including Humalog. Low blood sugar can happen suddenly, and symptoms may be different for each person and may change from time to time. Know your symptoms of low blood sugar. Severe low blood sugar can cause seizures and be life threatening. Follow your healthcare professional's instructions for treating low blood sugar. Talk to your healthcare professional if low blood sugar is a problem for you.

Other Side Effects
Other potential side effects associated with the use of insulins include: low blood potassium, weight gain, changes in fat tissue at the injection site, and allergic reactions. Allergic reactions can happen at the site of injection and over the whole body. Whole-body allergic reactions are less common, but may be life threatening.

Pumps
When used in an external insulin pump, Humalog should not be diluted or mixed with any other insulin. Humalog administration in insulin pumps has not been studied in patients with type 2 diabetes. The infusion set and Humalog should be replaced and a new infusion site selected every 48 hours or less. Glucose monitoring is particularly important for patients using an external insulin pump. Humalog in the external pump should not be exposed to temperatures above 37°C (98.6°F).

Humalog was tested in the MiniMed® Models 506, 507, and 508 insulin pumps using MiniMed® Polyfin® infusion sets.

Humalog was also tested in Disetronic® H-TRONplus® V100 insulin pump (with plastic 3.15 mL insulin reservoir), and the Disetronic D-TRON® and D-TRONplus® insulin pumps (with Humalog 3 mL cartridges) using Disetronic Rapid® infusion sets. A Humalog 3 mL cartridge used in the D-TRON or D-TRONplus should be discarded after 7 days, even if it still contains Humalog. Infusion sets, D-TRON and D-TRONplus cartridge adapters, and Humalog in the external insulin pump reservoir should be discarded every 48 hours or less.

Humalog (insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]), Humalog Mix75/25 (75% insulin lispro protamine suspension, 25% insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]), and Humalog Mix50/50 (50% insulin lispro protamine suspension, 50% insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]) are for use in patients with diabetes to control high blood sugar. Humalog should be used with longer-acting insulin, except when used in combination with sulfonylureas in patients with type 2 diabetes.
